Incantation Bowls
The amulets’ counterparts are the incantation bowls, on which a magical formula was written in a spiral. In many cases there is similarity between the texts, but there are also differences that distinguish one formula from the other. In the Israeli corpus the text is relatively short and the names of demons are rarely detailed. The uniqueness of the incantation bowls is that they are individual and refer to a private aspect of the owner of the bowl, an aspect that is not part of the community. The bowl was usually ordered for an individual, whose intimate history was referred to in the formula itself. The text applies both to such supernatural powers as demons and spirits that lie in wait for humans and try to harm them, as well as to angels that can help the human who invoked them.
Incantation bowls developed into a very popular demon-fighting technique during antiquity and filled a gap which traditional religions could not. The purpose of the texts written in the incantation bowls was to protect the owners of the bowls from demons and disease-causing evil spirits. At times the texts were meant to strengthen status, and at rarer times, a bowl’s purpose was to harm another person.
The incantation bowl is a type of amulet that is written on clay bowls; after the ritual of writing was done, the bowls were buried beneath the floors of a private home or public buildings.
